Improving Primary English

This online programme is delivered over a three-month period of time, with candidates attending three online meetings and having access to the Support4Schools eLearning site. The course contains a series of video tutorials with access to a range of resources. Candidates are supported through email and online meetings by a designated tutor. A course completion certificate is awarded on the submission of tasks related to the course. The content is practical and relates to the areas of development identified by their school’s achievements. Candidates can access the eLearning area and the course tutorials at a time of their choosing within the three-month period.

The course is organised into three sections:

1. Analysis of Data
• National Data
• School Data
• Achievement of different groups
• Analysis of KS SATS answers
2. Pupil Assessment for Learning
• Writing
• Reading
• Phonics
(According to the area identified)
3. Action Planning
Planning the next steps:
Which could be to improve:
• Boys writing
• Increasing number of level 5s
• Speaking & Listening
• Raising no. of pupils achieving level 4+
• Improving phonics etc.

Course Outcomes
• To improve teachers’ knowledge of assessing pupils’ English skills
• To improve teachers’ knowledge of setting learning objectives identified through the assessment process
• To develop understanding about how pupils best develop their English skills
• To work with colleagues on improving pupil performance
• To implement ways of improving pupil progress
• To identify and overcome potential barriers to pupils’ learning
• To track pupils progress and analyse outcomes
• To consider whole school management of literacy teaching and learning

Assessment
A number of tasks and assignments form part of the course. These include:
• To analyse school data from Raise on Line.
• To analyse class outcomes from SATs Reading Comprehension Papers
• To assess individual pupil/s: Reading, Phonic knowledge; Writing.
• To plan and implement a programme of work and monitor progress.
• To measure and report on the impact of the programme.

Course Tutor
Course Tutor Sue McCaldon (M.A. in Teaching) is our specialist tutor for the Course. Sue has vast experience of developing Literacy programmes and her past experience includes being a LA Senior School Improvement Officer with responsibility for Literacy and Manager for the National Literacy Project in Manchester. She was a co-author of the Reading Intervention Programmes: Earlystart, Kickstart and Freshstart and has contributed to several books and television programmes in the area of Literacy.
